I just wondered if it would be possible to have no downstand as this would look better in the room.

it all depends on the brick line and how much disturbance above the floor you will tolerate. worst case is needling through... next one is lowering your existing ceiling by 20 to 30mm. one is easier... one has a lot more disturbance...

I imagine there will be a concrete lintels in place at present, but all will be revealed soon when we open it up to see what can & can't be done.

Lowering the ceiling height slightly would be ok so maybe the option of having no downstand is realistic, I'll report back when I know more.
