8" Brake Hub Identity 4" PCD 4 Stud

The trailer has no identification plate on it, so finding the original manufacturer is not possible. It has obviously been professional made. It is relatively short and made of square section ladder configuration & would be ideal to transport my small 1.5t digger. It had been sitting in a paddock for a few years, so all he galvanised chassis shows no sign of rust, the hubs (backing plates and internals have suffered. The indespension units are fine. If I could find the origin of the hubs somehow, that would allow me to refurbish them. Thanks, Terry

How about just replacing the lot? Buy the complete backplates/shoes/cylinders/hub and drum from a scrap car?

The other option I suppose is to utilise the suspension units with new hub assemblies. However, as the drive shafts are welded to the suspension units I would need to match hubs to the existing spindles. Could the profile of the shafts give a clue to the origin of the original donor hubs? Terry

As per Norseman, all wheels will need to be braked and I think Mottie has struck gold with the Nova gear.
Can you give us some more pics of the trailer, draw bar and brake compensator if possible?
John

Unfortunately all that is left of the cabling is a short length of wire from the parking brake lever, the rest had croded away whilst it was sitting. So I will have to start from scratch on the new configuration. Thanks, Terry

I'm quite well experienced in the refurb and repair of 4 wheel trailers, often Indespension and Ifor Williams makes.
These use either Al-Ko or Knott braking systems - and very primitive they are too.
From the drawbar comes a long solid rod to a 4 way compensator, and that connects to the 4 cables going to the brake drums.
Naturally enough these cables are different lengths front and back and you could have some difficulty here.
Please keep us informed of your project!
John :)

Another thing you might want to consider, trailer brakes are designed so that they don't come on when you reverse. Because you are using car brakes, you won't be able to reverse your trailer unless you have a hitch like this.

Thanks for all your advice. The trailer hitch does have a flip over for reversing. Thanks, Terry

I'm not convinced old Nova running gear is good for 1.5 tonnes of digger and half a tonne of trailer. Does it have a plate?

I guess it depends on the rating of the four Indespention units.....originally it would have been stamped on each one.
A digger trailer also needs a very strong ramp to get the thing on board - and that means a huge bar hinge of some description.
John

There is no plate on it. Apparently it originated on a farm & made out of very substantial square hollow section. the ramps are also made from the same material and the whole thing galvanised. I am away at the moment, so will attach pictures when I return. If I had to go down to changing the hubs, any suggestions on what more modern donor vehicles would be appropriate to source hubs from. Bearing in mind it would have to have 13" wheels as I have new tyres on the current wheels. Thanks again for all your advice and suggestions. Terry

Just a follow on from previous threads, I have cleaned up what looks like identification letters/numbers which may lead to finding out more about the source of the 8" hub. If anyone can throw any light on that? Thanks, Terry
