a little help needed on wiring sat round the house please.

Hi i am hoping to buy a new build house very soon and the builder has asked me where i want sockets etc including tv sky ,telephone etc
I was thinking in the living room to have a

Then in the 2 bedrooms and kitchen regular tv sockets .
additional telephone socket on one of the bedrooms

I think i am supposed to supply the correct cable before the builders plaster the walls .
So what i am asking is
does this lagear socket look corrrect
what satelite and aerial cables are recommended ?

3 x sat cables from that back to the loft.

2 x sat cables from other locations back to the loft (and appropriate sat/tv outlets not 'regular' tv outlets)

2 x ethernet from every location back to the loft (or wherever the network switch/hub will be). You can run phone over one of those.

You will also need the appropriate distribution amp in the loft to combine satellite/tv/fm/dab and return signals. 13A power in the loft.

if you are doing the sat/tv cabling it is little extra work to add ethernet at an early stage but a lot of work to add later. when I built my house over twenty years ago home networks were unheard of I have added ethernet sockets whenever possible in the interim and if I could have done it at first fix I definetly would have done, just as an aside i now need/have three ethernet sockets at the tv position just for the smart tv,sky box and freesat box. dont forget that if you use those labgear plates they will need a phone cable to make use of the phone socket(sky?)
 
yea agreed. I would at least double up on the number of ethernet cables you pull into each location, better to have upgrade capacity than not.

I would consider pulling it all back to the understairs cupboard / loft and wire it all into a patch panel in a small cab on the wall, then you can connect them to your router as needed.

If I connected everything in my house via wired rather than wireless (I have a mix of both) I would need a 12+ way path panel. So go for at least a 16 or 2 x 16's and you have expansion capability.

As has been posted elsewhere, you can also run HDMI over ethernet with converters. Can use it for CCTV too

Thankyou, is it simple procedure , what will i need to get in addition to the tv/ sat stuff . Do i put special sockets in everyroom ,a particular cable ?

Before starting out you must decide what you want to end up with, especially on the TV.

Wiring for SKY multi room off a SKY dish will be completely different to wiring if you are using Apple TV/ Internet TV off fibre network coming from the street.

Do you want every TV in the house to be able toselect their own channel, or can it be the same channel on every TV.
will you be using Freeview on most TVs, etc etc.

Best to get an AV expert in and discuss the options, lay the cable in and then get him/her in to get it all working.
 
In all honesty , sky hd in the living room ,freeview in the bedrooms and kitchen will be all i need .
 
although you say what your requirements are at present , future proofing is easier now!!!!
 
I can't believe that the builder asks the user about cables. He is the professional and he should advise.

The use of band pass filters as shown in your query does allow multi-frequency goes yes you can combine and split but this is one way. So likely at least 3 cables are required.

Two down one with all frequencies the other taking the second sky feed for sky +. And one up taking the RF from the sky box back to loft.

From there then back to every room.

OK that's theory but in practice much depends on the area and how many free frequencies there are.

I really had a hard time finding free frequencies to transfer analogue signals from the sky box. Even as a radio ham I did not find it easy.

If you abandon freeview OK but to use both is not easy.

The box you show is only half on the system. There has to be another box in the loft to combine the signals first. There are boxes which will change the frequency of the second sky signal so reducing cables required but expensive.

In my house sky with two cables from dish to sky box then output from sky box combines with output from DVD/Hard Drive back to loft then boosted and sent to all other rooms so just two channels in all other rooms. Did have freeview but it kept re-tuning one time channel 1 was BBC Wales the next day it was BBC North West so gave up with the silly system all satellite now.

I do use free to air as well as sky so in bedroom I can watch different program to my wife. Digi eyes allow me to change sky channel from any room.

The digi-eye is also a problem as it needs DC and many wall sockets have capacitors to stop static giving you a belt. These need shorting out for digi-eye to work. With satellite static is not a problem only with freeview is it a problem

As you can see no easy answer. Which is why in the main TV guys install the system it is not done as DIY.

I really think to try to get an ordinary person to understand band pass filters is really not being fair. OK as a radio ham (GW7MGW) I do understand how they work but I do wish you luck.
 
I've just done a complete refurb on the house I intend to move into soon. Here's what I did (at very little cost)

Sky dish with octo lnb on the side of the house - 4x twin satellite cables (WF100) back to under stairs cupboard.

Virgin Media cable back to under the stairs cupboard.

BT cable back to under stairs cupboard.

TV aerial back to under stairs cupboard

Each room has at least 1 twin satellite cable and 2x Cat 6 cables to it for a TV point. Most have more, eg the bedrooms each have 2x Cat 6 next to the bed, the study has more Cat6. Each room has two extra Cat 6 to the ceilings for built in speakers.

This means that each room can be configured for Sky, VM, Network and Phone, depending on its requirements. I have a fully populated 48 port Cat 6 patch panel 24 port "F type" patch panel.

For termination in the rooms, I've mainly used these Populated with these and these

Ok, I admit it could be considered to be a bit over-kill, but I'm a geek and for ease and future proofing, I think it was well worth the minimal cost.

I hate to say it but those plates and sockets are way overpriced. I made my own f plates for about £1 each and the rj45 sockets can be had for about a £1 each as well.
