OK, thanks for all the comments so far - I think !!
I'm not rushing into anything major just yet, my next step is to add a PIR inside my unprotected car port (not really outside, it has a roller door) to a least protect it. Garage / sheds etc already have wired PIRs.
So, thinking about the chime facility on th 9448; If I program the garage/shed/car port PIRs as chime zones (when the alarm is unset) also fit an extension 16ohm speaker in the house and modify it with a simple on/off switch.
Hopefully this will at least alert me when I'm in the house of an evening when the alarm is unset. Before bed then I part set as normal for full protection.
I know this won't alert me to anything on the drive, but without going down the beam route there's not much else I can do and even this is only going to alert when I'm there.
