Hi,

I currently having a 2 storey extension done at the side of my house. Idea is to have a ensuite bedroom upstairs and downstairs.

The area being built on is not that wide. The Downstairs area will be around 9.6m x 2.4m. The area upstairs will be 6m x 2.2m. The complicating factor is that the rooms will not be that wide.

The builder wants to know how big I want the bathrooms so he can start planning the internal walls and I am stumped. I would like a largish bedroom but don't want a tiny ensuite. On the other hand, I don't want an ensuite so large that it dwarfs the bedroom. Can anyone help me with suggestions? Is there some sort of golden rule that builders use for the ratio of bedroom size to ensuite size?

Friends with a similar lack of space have created an open plan ensuite. Basically the bed and the bath are in the same room with a light weight screen between them,

Ventilation to remove steam from the sleeping area was problematic.

floor plan might help? I dont think size is as key as is getting correct the position of toilet, shower, basin, layout is equally as key and im sure a well thought out smaller ensuite is better than a big ensuite that wastes lots of space

Thank you. As the extension is in the process of being built, the floor plan is up to me.

Nah, floor plans are for losers.

Go to a showroom with shower cubicle and see how you get in with your proposed size BEFORE you tell your builder AND there are rules about access and space around toilets

The builders are doing the extension to the BC diagram but say the internals are up to me. I can make internal rooms whatever size I want. So I have the choice of what size I want the ensuite rooms.

Your ensuite wants to be as big as it needs to be and no bigger. Our shower room is about 2.2m square and contains a shower, loo and vanity basin. Look at bath sizes (av1750mm long) and rectangular showers and go from there.
