Hi all

I recently purchased a new handle as old one was old and the 7mm spindle was spinning/slipping in the door mechanism.

You could actually see through the spindle hole in mech where it had rounded off.

I then put in a spare 8mm as these I have only seen on the past and it worked fine.

The problem is the new handle also came with a small 7mm spindle so that also does not work and an 8mm will not fit the handle but does fit the door mechanism?

I have done a bit of googling and it seems they sell 7 to 8mm shims but how would they stay in place in the centre and stay in the doir mechanism?

Or do I need split end spindles?
Will they compress from 8mm into a 7mm handle?
No idea what their use it tbh??

Anyone advise please.

The shims are for when converting handles from a 7mm spindle to an 8 but by sounds of it you have 7mm handles but an 8mm lock so shims won't work

I can’t find handles with 8mm spindles?

Why cant I do the opposite and use the shins in the mech part and use 7mm handles?

It is there somewhere I can get 8mm handles of the type I have linked?

Thanks

Because how are you going to get the shims in there and stay there? That's not where the shims are designed to go, they are for converting a 7mm spindle into an 8mm so the spindle fits snuggly in your 8mm handles.

All modern handles are 8mm now but your problem is you have ancient door handles and sizes and are limited in choice so along with those dimensions your limited to 7mm spindles because that's what they used 100years ago, 70mm PZ handles are old school, everything is standardized now @ 92mm, one way around it is using universal handles with a adjustable PX, overall the handle is taller so you will need to drill holes through the door

I’m going weld/tack them into the centre of the spindle so the centre will be 8mm.
