I don't know if I have titled this right, or am looking for the right thing ont tinternet...

I am vaguely aware that biologists/geologists classify living organisms into 'ages' by their population?

For instance, there was an age of the dinosaurs, now it is the age of the mammals (even though all mammals are dependant on insects). I think there are 5 others.

Anyone know what I am on about?

Well, according to the Mount Wilson observatory, the moon is currently in the seventh house. Recently, the Royal Observatory in Greenwich announced that Jupiter is aligned with Mars.

By this, we can see that we are at the dawning of the "Age of Aquarius". ;)

But seriously, yes I do know what you are on about: one of my friends is a paleontologist and does like to talk about it all. From trips about the museum-like geology department, as well as the Natural History Museum next door, it could be summed up pretty much as:

1) age of microbes
2) age of macroscopic life
3) age of reptiles
4) age of mammals

Can't think of any more than that.

Of course, biologists do like to use different classification systems: I was always taught the Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species ("King penguins can't often find good sandwiches" was the mnemonic  ), but there are others.

So, there could well be 7 ages in another system.

The "ages" as your thinking of them are actually just arbitary and do not hold any true relationship to periods in Earth's history.

In scientific terms out planet's history is made up thus.

Cenozoic..66 Million Years ago to present and is split into 7 sub periods

Mesozoic..which was split into three periods lasting from 245 Million years to 66 millions ago, and covers the entire span of the Dinosaurs. It ended with the KT event.

Paleozoic..which is sub-divided into 6 periods starting some 570 Million years ago.

Precambrian..which is split into the Proteozoic and the Archean periods.

If you want more detailed information and the names of all the sub-periods, then see THIS LINK

Nah, that's past it's prime already, going on to midnight now. We're about to enter the Pisces era. (Where old wisdom will rule the Earth ;)

But I do ! ! !
(And knowing as aquarius is being a bit too wet for comfort which era you think I prefer? Old wisdom = old oaks ;))

Thanks AdamW, I did think that you might answer this when I wrote it, as in a previous thread I remembered that you said you had a degree in something related to the science subject for girls. ;)

Biology was always seen as the 'weaker' science subject. It's a very old stereotype, and not applicable anymore. But I am still flogging it. I did chemistry at university and there was always a bit of competition between the sciences. But one thing is for sure, everyone hates physicists.
