Hi. We had a new soil pipe put in and a new toilet but since the work I have getting a lot of sewage smells coming up around the soil pipe. No leaks anywhere but I have seen that there is a void around the base of the soil stack that air is rising up from. The void is wide enough to put my hand in and its 40 cm deep.

Any ideas what to do? Can I just squert in a load of expanding foam and hope this prevents the rising air flow an smells?

no

very likely a crack below the ground

post some photos.

This should help to show the gap size. It's an internal soil pipe and I wonder if this neat frame was sealed but recent work has broken it all away and now we are seeing this gap?

To add, we have only noticed it when it's been hot or raining a lot but the breeze is there a lot.

is the brown part plastic or "pottery?"

how old is the house?

is this part of an extension?

what manhole covers can you see?

is the floor concrete?

stand back and take some wider pics please

The brown pipe is the original pottery clay one..
House builders lt in 1980's
Its the original waste pipe. We have not added anything more to the soil stack that was not already there.
About 10feet away in the garden we have a concrete man hole. I lifted it today and ran a tap in the toilet. Water was flower ng out OK. The smell of terps in the sewer was the same smell we were get in in the toilet area.

Is that pipe casing common to be open like the picture with no seal around it to allow air flow?

Another angle

Concrete floor yes.
Could it be a broken AAV in the loft that is just pulling air up all the time?

Ignore the loft insulation. Just wedging it in to stem the air flow

The gap is around the back on the pipe and not easily accessible
