You may have been the only house on a run with an open vent prior to new stack.
Waterless trap is the way forward and does work.
They were invented for crap plumbing technique rectification!

Cant tell from the picture, but does the stack terminate just below the soffit with the AAV? Does seem daft to have taken it up that height and not either gone through the soffit/roof or swan necked around the gutter to vent to atmosphere.

I agree! Builder did it 5 years ago. I will do what the other chap said and cut it down. No need to be that high. I can't service it
