Aldi Telescope

my interest is not astronomy, but wildlife. there is an abandoned field behind my house, with foxes, rabbits, heron, migrating wildfowl etc.

60x is a bit excessive, you need a tripod. Unfortunately a zoom tends to reduce the quality still more.

bins will do but are heavy to hold for long.

Aldi: Prices ok, but the quality is no where near the best.

With lenses for top quality you want Carl Zeiss lenses or similar. The lenses is what determines the quality of the image - the same goes for cameras and video cameras etc.

You get what you pay for.

I have an Atlas Explorer telescope which I've had for about five years. It looks impressive but by the time I move it from my spare room, down the stairs and into the garden where I then have to set it up... it's daytime. I find that by bins are better

I didn't say I "dont want quality"

However I have to cut my coat according to my cloth. Maybe one day you will have to consider costs.

didn't get one from Aldi in the end. I thought the field of view was too small. I got a second hand prismatic 20x50mm Summit off ebay which is adequate and very light and compact.

BTW mine does not have the angled eyepiece, which I should think is preferable as you can use a tabletop tripod.

There is a shortage of rabbits this year so the field is heavily overgrown with long grass and cow-parsley, so not much to see. We get migrating geese in the winter, I don't know if they will want to graze it.

So my earlier post, my hdisk, no fails for over 5 years, for half the price, and the slide viewer, for £10/20 when exactly the same was sold in Argos for £60, so where is the 'you get what you pay for?' aspect? That's just disrespecting a brand. Aldi - German company, Carl Zeiss, German..who's to say the telescope isn't top quality? When they sell high street brands, at bargain prices?

I cannot reacll seeing identical products in Aldi that are also sold in Argos. Aldi tend to sell lesser known brand names.

Just google Aldi telescope, most reviews are unfavourable. Anyway the OP did not purchase one - a sensible decision.

Hi,
My personal advice is stear well clear of the Aldi Telescope. Just my opinion, but it is not good quality. If you want a good telescope for some decent astronomy you need better quality than Aldi. I have a Skywatcher and a Meade telescope, both computer controlled.

Its strange that Metromans 'first' and only post to date was on a topic that was last replied to 17 months ago.

That must have taken some finding ;)

Perhaps he was looking for information on telescopes, found an old post and replied without checking the date. It's easily done. I know because I've done it myself.

Highly unlikely as he would initially have to be thinking 'I wonder what topics exist that relate to telescopes, that I can reply to'!

Lidl often do specials on binoculars and telescopes which are made by or branded as Bresser and are pretty good. The 10x50 binoculars they did for £10 a few years back are excellent. Also got a Bresser brand telescope off them for about £60.

Aldi stuff I find is cheap and a bit crap. If it lasts beyond the job you bought it for you're lucky.
