This is simple fault and bread butter stuff for a competant engineer.I think the advant of the six week gas man has surely come home to roost!
I had similiar customer today spend all sorts with a local firm and huge bill and left a very basic thing which was the descale of the secondry heat exchanger .
I would dispute all charges here and get a local independent british gas or even vaillant themselves and ask them to repair it properly and also to give you report,so if it does go to litigation then at least you have and independent on your side
