I just got a 9 inch screen one of these. Once I opened it and looking at the dashboard it's obvious it's going to block some of the view through the windscreen. My question is basically does anyone know what is allowed or not allowed with regards to something blocking your view. I can't imagine there's many cases where an apple or android screen won't block at least a bit of view on any car.

It's a consideration at MOT time, could be considered as a failure item if noticeably affecting the view.
Is it showing TV or films etc or maps and radio etc.

Does it impinge, on your view of any of the screen, swept by the wipers? If so, then there might be issues.

I don't think it does that. Mostly satnav and you can play audio things though it. And there's a dashcam in it.

I've not taken it out there box yet as I'm thinking it's got to go back. But I don't see how these things won't block the view on most cars. Especially mine by the looks of things

If it has a dashcam, it'll have to be mounted on the dash (unless it has a discreet, separate camera).
Most likely block some view, as well as being a royal distraction.

It’s not just MOT time.

Plod can stop you and deal with you at the road side to
I don't get how there's such a big industry for these things. Nearly all of them must break the law. Some even stick to the windscreen. And they're the size of a tablet.

My built-in 7x4 screen, which includes all the toys, fits in the centre dash, below eye level. A front & rear tiny, flat dashcam I added, has the main front facing unit tucked in the top right corner of the screen, hidden behind the sun visor, rear cam fixed under the high level brake light fixture. All very discreet, not even noticeable.

Some of the built-in Android screens, flip up, out of the dash.

That's the difference between the built in and aftermarket ones. I'll attach a screenshot from Amazon to show what they are like.

My E39 has an aftermarket android built in as a replacement for the original set-up & that has the capability to show DVD's, though not for long without running the engine as the amps draw is a killer.
Fitted by a previous owner several years ago it's a great piece of kit with sat-nav, car 'phone & reversing camera, but unfortunately the screen has now failed & nobody wants to repair Chinese products, so I'm just making use of the radio/CD audio functions as there are far better ways to spend £300 + keeping an old car on the road.

It's an offence for dvds etc to be able to be seen by driver if vehicle is in drive

My Android is also a replacement fit, for the original. TV was an analogue unit, with a very clunky satnav, tape, plus add on CD player. It comprised several discrete parts, mounted around the car, plus a Harmon Kardon amps, speakers and bass unit. Sounded absolutely wonderful. I took the lot out, and replaced all of it with a modern head unit, which I interfaced to the HK, selling the parts on to other owners, which more than paid for the new one, plus fancy Freeview receiver, and it still sounds wonderful.

Thought I do an update in case anyone cares. I've noticed the pictures I've just added. The top right one shows it stuck to the dashboard instead of the windscreen meaning you can get it lower. Maybe that's a way to get around the problem.
