"Hitachi is preparing to abandon its plans to build a new power station at Wylfa on Anglesey, an island off the coast of north Wales, in a severe blow to Britain’s struggling nuclear power programme.

The Japanese industrial giant is expected to take the decision formally at a board meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday, according to multiple figures close to the project.

The move is the latest blow to the UK’s struggling nuclear plan at a time when it is rushing to cut the emissions that cause climate change in order to meet a “net zero carbon” target by 2050."

"It also hits UK plans to reduce reliance on China, which has been keen to fund other nuclear projects in the face of growing opposition from UK politicians."

Further justification that the Swansea Lagoon project should be given the go ahead.
It was projected to be really expensive. It'd have lasted a hundred years, but pricey in the here and now. I liked it.

The lagoon project is far more than just a hydroelectric power station. It would enclose a vast are of water which would be used for all types of water sports/leisure activities which would be a major tourist attraction.

Nowhere near as expensive as nuclear, and that's without the 'clean up' costs!

But the backhanders from the really big corporates weren't so great...

Mind you I think we can expect more rejections of investment in UK PLC from now on since it has decided to isolate itself!
