I know this sounds a bit daft - but am not a sparkie so hopefully you will forgive my ignorance.

With a rewire is ALL the wiring replaced?

?

For a full rewire, yes, and, probably/maybe the consumer unit, meter tails, earth bonds (which may be upgraded by the DNO if required) and the fittings. There may be occasions when a partial rewire is considered for a specific reason, eg fire or flood damage, but you could consider these the exceptions.

What is the best way to get the electricians I have round to break down the quote - simply parts and labour or room by room or any other ideas??

For what reason?

If it is a "quote" it is a price for the job regardless of how it breaks down. I never quote only "estimate".

Room by room is not an option, as the circuits will each serve more than one room (with the exception of some kitchen ccts and a shower, say) and each room will have at least 2 ccts serving it (light and power).

Parts and labour is feasible but will always be subject to alteration if things are not as expected. If you are trying to save money just consider, a tradesman has been buying parts etc for ages in his locale and will know where to get the best deal for reasonable quality - cheaper stuff is not always a saving.

it also depends on thing like wheter you've moved in by the time of the re-wire, what time of year it takes place ( can't leave heating or light off for long in the winter etc.. )...

if you can "move out" for the week of the re-wire they may give you a discount since they don't have to "make good" every night by replacing flooring and furniture and leaving circuits on..

just stop at a friends for a week.. by all means, have someone there during the day to keep an eye on them, but sleep elsewhere..

your average 8 hour day breaks down to 1 hour in the morning moving furiture and pulling flooring up, and 1 hour at night putting it all back..

also, if you're not stopping there, they can work longer days...
