I've dabbled in growing garlic for a couple of years, not too bad results. I found out early on about scapes, and having to cut them off when the stem curls, and they do taste nice. This year I had 2 lots on the go, one lot the scapes appeared and the stems curled, so I cut them off, but the other lot seemed to have small cloves growing about 1/4 way up the stem, so couldn't cut them out without removing all the foliage. Anyone know what they are and how to deal with them in future? Just thought, could a mod move this to gardening please.

Elephant Garlic, been growing these for last 15 years up to 100 bulbs planted each year.

I have always cut the roots when I dig them out they cut better when soft, and not had a problem keeping. Monty on tv garden programmer says leave them on , take your choice.

We are still using last years crop so they do keep.

The little side cloves are a not worth keeping I break mine off and throw away.

Picture of some of this years crop and broken off small cloves

Nice. Mine didn’t grow this year, mind you, I didn’t plant them until March/April!

I was really wanting to know what the bulb like things are on the stem, and if they are supposed to be there, or do they have to be removed. The variety in question is "Rhapsody Wight". May try some Elephant garlic, what is the flavour like?
P.S, get my bulbs for planting from the I.O.W garlic farm when I visit my brother.

As I said above Mini Garlic cloves see in my picture I trow them away.
I always plant October so they are in the ground a good frost will do them good, I can only what I do, buy never a failed crop see this years picture.

Elephant garlic are supposed to be sweated not as strong, don't tell my wife when she has to cook with them you need the extractor fan on.

.

Do you leave them while they're still growing ?
Not sure what you mean.

If there are any there they stay on the plant until I harvest the garlic.
Have some many full size bulbs I throw them away, not boasting this but this years crop are a lot smaller as they were planted near and under a big nut tree.

Those mini cloves in my picture are produced a short way up the stem, I was wondering if it makes any difference if you leave them on, as they say to remove scapes while the garlic is still growing, and these could be some form of scape.
Not heard of that, mine seem to grow on the bulbs.

Buy yourself different seem garlic for this year.

We started of with two from a local market planted them and I keep the firm and best for my seed haven't bought anymore.
