From what I understand, mowing is just about the most effective weed prevention method if the terrain allows it.
We similarly have a big infestation of Himalyan Balsam in the small 'field' (scrubby 1/2-acre) sharing a long border with our garden. The hedge helps a lot but I see a lot trying to get through this year, it's a bit like Day of the Triffids.
