Any musicians on here

Humbuckers have two coils, to "Tap" means to only use One of the coils, therefore the other coil is effectively left out of the circuit. The one that's not in the circuit isn't cut to earth, it's just open and doesn't/cannot, form a circuit. When you "Tap" them, you can wire a switch in a circuit so you can actually select either of the coils or both. This is often called coil cutting (where Joe is getting confused) but coil cutting and tapping are both the same. You can't possibly "Tap " a single coil pickup as there are only two wires coming from it. What on earth would you "tap" into ????? ;) ;) ;)

well to be fair to joe, john you can get manufactured single coil pickups that have an extra cable already "tapped" into the winding so you have in effect two coils in series on the same bobbin
the same as you normally have two coils in series on a humbucker
(that you can tap into)
Joe is just being pedantic, argumentative or clueless

you tend to short pickup coils out to take them out of circuit, not leave them open circuit BTW
