One of my friends had an older brother who recently died of asbestos cancer. He was a builder, and did work for me and my family.
In his case it was probably around fifty years after exposure. It struck me that active semi-retired builders in their 70s ought to do asbestos removal as they won't have 50 years for it to develop, and they could demand high pay for work that nobody else should do.
You should know what risks there are when hacking the place up. No risk just sitting there, but there is if you pull a ceiling down or start cutting into it. Get everything known at the start, plan from there.
