i'm sure mine when I bought it didnt darken, I left it in the sun for an hour and then it worked fine. I always test if they are working before use by looking at a 240v light (the 50hz flicker trips them) sunlight or DC lights won't.

Actually, rereading the OP, Harry's auto-darkens (or not, currently).

On my Snap-On one, the screen is dark. I turn it on and it goes light. The millisecond I start welding, it darkens. Stop welding and it immediately lightens. I can adjust sensitivity as well as the amount of darkness too.

I used to test mine by flicking a lighter - the sparks should make it darken automatically.

Mine has no switch, just 3x adjusters for delay, darkness and something else..
