Balancing Radiators

Hi all,

Right, I understand what's involved in this and the theory of how to do it. Also, that the two main objectives are:

- have the radiators heat up in a relatively uniform fashion; and

- control the amount of heat the radiators give off to the room, typically a delta temperature of 12-20C being achieved.

For my heating system, there isn't an issue with the first part. They heat up in a reasonably uniform way. However, I want to increase the dT so radiators give out more heat to the rooms and return lower temperatures to the boiler for more efficient usage, i.e. condensing.

Currently, dT is only about 6C whether measured at boiler or radiators. This is based on a flow temperature of about 57C, and I've already adjusted settings to achieve efficency - eg. Reducing max output of the boiler and pump head setting. These haven't improved the dT.

So this leaves me with rebalancing. Since the radiators already heat up in a reasonably uniform way, what I want now is to increase dT. Even to 12C would be nice. Is it necessary for me to go through the whole rigmarole of opening all the valves and lock shields, and rebalancing from scratch or - for my purposes - can I get away with just tightening the lockshields a bit to try and reduce return temps?

Any other thoughts welcome.
