Barbecue - charcoal

My barbecue is based on an old metal wheelbarrow - couple of stone slabs on it, some bricks either side to hold the fire in and support the grill, wooden posts in the corner to stop it tipping - cost me nothing, lasted 3 years so far...

I tend to avoid charcoal BBQ`s not a great lover of semi cooked /raw Burgers/sausages and chicken portions ( all burnt on the outside and raw in the middle.) depending on how many beers the chef has had at the time .
At least with a Gas BBQ one can cook the food thoroughly
Don't worry you're not invited.

Never had food like that at one of my BBQ's! Someone's doing it wrong at the ones you go to....

I bought one of these last year. Plus a cover. It also came with a starter chimney, a pizza stone and included a promotional separate delivery of frozen meats - streaks, burgers- normal and venison, sausages etc. I think it came to about £350. I've used it once, haven’t even opened the box with the pizza stone and we still have some frozen burgers left. Well worth it!

I’m hoping to double my use this year! At this rate, it’ll see me out!

The Burgers are passed their sell by date , dont worry just bung them on the barbeque if you decide to use it this year, no one will know !!!

The venison burgers are out of date :( but the seasoned burgers are still good until the end of this month. (y)

Edit: Both okay as just noticed it’s a 'best before' date and not a 'use by' date. :D

Edit 2: Blimey, not much beef in the beef burgers and even less venison in the venison burgers!

Im a bit of a novice on the BBQ but Ive managed to get past that!

the problem is that people lay out the coals / charcoal evenly all the way across then put on the food on a fierce heat.

the food then burns on the outside and raw on the inside -once that's happened there is no way back.

Ive found have coals at each end and a bit top and bottom, start cooking in the centre of the grill -that way fat dripping down doesnt cause flare ups and the heat isnt too fierce.

Also a BBQ with a lid is great because the if the lid is lowered during the first stage of cooking, then the BBQ becomes an oven and the meat gets heated through.

Just move the stuff over towards the hot coals a bit later to finish off and chargrill the outside.

A chimney starter makes a huge difference for me.

and yes a £300 BBQ for 1/2 dozen times a year -its worth it!

Whilst in Somerset recently on hols I had 5 BBQS over a week -when staying in a cottage on a National Trust estate, you cant beat sitting outside in the evening, with a glass of wine, listening to the birds.

Listening to the birds coughing and spluttering because of the smoke !!!

No worse than a country full of cars for them?!
If I lived nearer you I'd invite you around for one of my BBQ's and there wouldn't be a burnt burger in sight! :)

Update - thanks for all the advice guys. I brought a Rhyno Charcoal bbq in the end and made use of it over the weekend. We had 30 guests (including the children) and it coped with one set of charcoal. Loved it!

Q. It took me over an hour to clean the grills with scourer and fairy liquid. I would like to use it on a more frequent basis (cook a few burgers etc) but don’t want to spend over an hour cleaning it each time! How does this work guys? Excuse the ignorance
