Bathroom Project, what the plumbers did ......

I'm not sure he can given the fall on the bath edge but can't see exactly how big the fall is from the photo.

We had a bath which was a normal bath and were driven to distraction by the water leakage through the gap in the shower screen & hinge.

Ended up ripping the bath out and replacing it with a bath that has a proper fall and lip on it that prevents water seeping out onto the floor.

Maybe there are solid hingeless screens he can use

Thanks guy's, both my wife and I hate glass shower screens, remember the bathroom is only1600x1600, a screen is too bulky in such small space, it's not just a case of the practicalities of fitting one, a curtain is just so much easier, it doesn't get in the way when the sprogs are in the bath, you can always reach the tap, there's a window remember, a curtain offers some privacy if the window is open when you shower, which I do, I could go on. A curtain needn't be a big bulky plastic affair, you can get fabric one's that are quite compact when closed, when it gets skanky after a year you buy a new one for a tenner.

The over bath shower in my last house was fitted with a perspex screen. Classy to look at but an absolute pain. It was a teeny bathroom - to climb into the bath you had to push the screen away from you to the wall and edge round the toilet (it wouldn't go the other way due to the washbasin fitment). To clean the bath sides or get to the taps to run the bath you had to actually get in the bath..... Like a numpty I didn't realise any of this till I used it for the first time. But the fitter should have known...

Day 6 (Monday)

Now I have to say I wasn't looking forward to seeing them on this day, as I know we were going to have a bit of a chat about things, in addition to the vanity unit shenanigans I'd found a half dozen or so other things that were concerning me over the weekend, including the devastation outside, a leaky pipe, the sink not being fixed blah blah blah.

But Monday arrived we had a good old chinwag about the vanity unit and their faces were a picture when I suggested a plinth was the only practicable way forward and that removal and refitting was on the cards. I could see the beads of sweat developing on their foreheads but it all remained nice and peaceful and amicable, so I left them to it with the conclusion being that they'd have a think abut it and we'd discuss it later that morning when they'd had a think about it. We did speak later and they proposed fitting a mitred piece of gloss white kitchen plinth under the vanity units which would sit straight on the floor and fill the gap so I agreed on the proviso that they took some progress photos and we would reassess it afterwards so in the end I drive home at lunchtime to check it out. Well it wasn't ideal but the gap was largely gone meaning there would be something to seal against when the vinyl goes down so I accepted it. Can't say as I thought too much of the mitre tbh but they seemed confident that they'd sealed it well, as they do kitchen worktops and the like.

The other items I'd picked up were just simple snags so no problems there.

They spent the afternoon doing the bath panel which is semi-permanent, that is there are two panels with a joint down the middle which cane be removed if necessary, each secured with two screws at the base. They'll be siliconed at the perimeters.

I'm so glad I wasn't doing that job for the OP.

Good Tradesmen are very rare these days, and most of those who pass themselves off as such are not worth a rub. I have moved eleven times, and I could write a small book of short stories about lazy, greedy, incompetent so-called tradesmen.

I really think there should be a 'name and shame' site just for them !!!

Why's that then, if you don't mind me asking? :)

A small update, the shower tap is kind of working OK now, they popped back to mess around with it, unfortunately I was not able to be there so don't know what they did, though I know they turned up the temp of the boiler even though it worked fantastically for the first week. And of course they had no access to the valves that are now behind the bath panel. Anyway apparently, I have the wrong type of boiler! Nice of them to of forgotten to point that out when I showed them specifically what shower valve I was going to order and specifically asked them if it would be OK, before I ordered it. Though the valve seems excessively warm now on the shower setting, anyway I will monitor it obviously.

I am not overly sure that fitting vanity units was the best choice in this bathroom, whilst they provide loads of storage but am not sure they will survive my family's obsession with getting the place soaked! But they can be changed for conventional units at another time if necessary.

In retrospect, to have a shower, it feels a little weird to stand at the end of the bath which is the slopping end where your back would normally go as you have to stand a foot or so away from the wall so the shower doesn't quite have the power to do an amazing job (unless you turn the power right up), my wife's OK as she's pretty short but I have to kind of bend towards the shower head a bit. Other than that though it's working OK. Obviously the shower curtain is up, the flooring is booked to go down in a week or so, so I will post a final set of pics then.

Thanks for a great write up - some familiar issues there. Luckily we spotted the knees knocking the radiator issue early and were able to shift the WC slightly - also switched the rad to a curved one which seemed to help.

I don't know if it's too late or whether there's enough room - but this stowaway shower curtain solution was perfect for us in our small bathroom refit where we didn't want a flappy mouldy shower curtain, but also didn't want a glass screen getting in the way of kids baths - I can't recommend it enough:
