Bay window construction

These Bays directly undrneath the main guttering on the roof and do not have their own guttering. We have mirrored the existing small bay window on our house.

The whole street has no guttering on the small upstairs bays I wonder if this is a fault in old house construction

Hi Its not clear as to whether you wish to fit lead roof your self or not. However with the aid of a template we would supply a bespoke made roof for this application from code 5 sheet lead at a cost of approx £430 +vat. You would need a tower scaffold in place to carry out such a job.

I would make a composite roof and cill.

12mm ply, then 50mm celotex then 12mm ply. Run a 30mm wide strip of timber around the perimeter. All this will need to be glued (gripfill or evostik) together.

Then for the roof, you may be able to get a wide lead sheet and then dress it. Have a nice scalloped lead around the edge.

Or just do it in EPDM - cheap and easy and will last very long time up there. No ned to flash up the wall if its just under the roof soffit

For the cill, fit a wide PVC sheet (or PVCu hollow cladding strips) to the underside, and then a 75mm cover strip to the front and side edges - this will allow a good drip. Or have more scalloped lead to match the top.

Run around all edges with silicone

Remember to overhang the roof by about 50mm, and have the bottom cill set back from the frame cills to allow the normal drip.

Take those to support timbers out and have a single nice bracket in the centre

What about a GRP bay top, which will come preinsulated with pu foam. it can be made to look like a lead top. Also to increase insulation use an insulatiing plaster board.

under cill use a high performance rigid insulation board like celotex. 70mm thk should do ya.

you will need a fascia detail below and soffit cladding to hide the insulating board though.

didnt go to page 2. OOPS woody appears to have best idea. IMO

also you may not get GRP top off the shelf to fit with it being drectly under main roof, but worth checking out.
