I tried with a switch (using L1 one way and COM), then tried connecting the two reds to bypass any switch to find out if the ceiling light wiring worked. No luck.

Have any other light fittings ,in any other room ,been removed for decorator ?
Do you have any testing equipment ,multimeter ,voltage tester ?

Any damaged wires?
It's been known for a wire to be broken inside what appears to be an intact piece of insulation. Have a look where the wires come out of the ceiling.
