Hi

I've got the BG330+ boiler fitted in a wall unit. It's recently started making a funny whining/whooping noise and I'm wondering whether to try and get it repaired or replaced. It was installed 5 years ago and I had an engineer out yesterday to service it and he couldn't rectify it.

I've just noticed that Glow Worm do a new Energy System Boiler that looks like it could be a direct replacement for the BG330+ as it's got a back flue. I see there's also a Vaillant option which could be the same as the Glow Worm, I don't know. The engineer who serviced it was talking about a Bosch but that has a top flue which would mean patching up the external brickwork.

Are the new Glow Worm boilers any good as we haven't been too impressed by the BG330+ so far? For your info we have a Megaflo tank and a Monarch scaleout water filter. Any advice appreciated.

Possibly fixed price repair from Glow worm?

Hard water area? Could be scaled up heat exchanger.

I agree that it would be preferable to have it repaired, however I rang Glow Worm this morning and I was told about 2 options. One a fixed price £311 or £99 call out if it couldn't be fixed, or another scheme at around £50/month for 6 months where it will either be repaired, or if it's beyond repair £750 towards a new one. Either way I wasn't entirely convinced that they could do any more than the service engineer did yesterday who actually spoke to Glow Worm. I was hoping that Glow Worm would send someone round with a van full of parts to repair it but I'm not sure. By the way I have seen this fault mentioned a few times on the internet and I'm not sure anyone has reported what the solution is. Just puzzled which is the right way to go.

Is that repairable? Is it expensive? I wondered whether it was something like that. I just mentioned in a post about repair options. I bet it's not covered. The repair scheme did say something about not covering sludge.

It's repairable but it will cost you. If that IS the problem. It can be flushed through to descale but it's a right pain to do. Dunno what they charge these days but it's a good half days work at least. I'd get a price on a descale but only once it has deffo been diagnosed as that being the problem. There are other possibilities, flue issues, condensate blocked? Hard to give you a definitive without actually being there. You need a good engineer to diagnose.

So, the big question!! If I signed up with Glow Worm would they send a good engineer, or am I wasting my time? It does sound tempting to spend £330 to possibly get £750 off a new boiler if they can't fix it. But then again it wasn't clear as to what boiler would be provided.

can you video it making the noise, you will have to upload the video to youtube and paste the link on here

sounds like the combustion settings are out, or possibly a faulty flue seal, either way a very easy repair for an experienced engineer
That sounds promising. The service engineer yesterday went through the settings with Glow Worm on the phone and there was times it got better and worse but it wasn't consistent. So you've given me confidence it is fixable if you know what you are doing. I think I just need to find a local Glow Worm expert, or go with the Glow Worm repair plan.

if you say where you are in the country possibly someone from here can help, or recommend someone in your area

Also, is it possible to find a list of glow worm specialists in an area? When you look at installers details it usually lists all the boiler brands.
