Got some 3m bifolds coming and was wondering what is suitable to span above. I have some 8x2 laying about,,, would there be much difference in doubling them up vs alternatively using 6x2 flitch beam. Not fussed either way, just want to get it right for the doors TIA

Meant to say, no load from roof joists as they run opposite sides

Assuming by the lack of info, this is a stupid question and steel will always be better than timber :ROFLMAO:

4x2 studs, 3m high max build and got Planning permission. Height isn't an issue other than if I put in 8x2 as lintel they will be higher than the wall plate and because the roof joists are running from side to side rather than to the front, it would make my overhang slightly difficult

So this is a new timber frame extension you're building? If you only add stark information then you'll only get stark responses.

Even though the title says garden room? I'm not complaining about lack of responses, actually taking the **** out of my self for asking what I assumed was a silly question!!

If the joists are going the opposite way then its not really a wall plate 2 no. 8x2 should be plenty
Yes true. So my 3 walls are currently sat with a wall plate 2300mm high, 8x2 joists on top, overhanging sides and 8x2 laddering for overhang at rear. Bifolds are 2125 with 18mm flooring, so give or take 2145mm, if I put the 8x2's doubled up above the doors with a bit of extra wriggle room, I've only got around 140mm to top of wall plates, so the 8x2s will be above by around 50mm. How would you go about adding the front overhang? Notch out the small 8x2 overhang timbers? TIA

You're not stupid, you just didn't formulate the question with enough information.

Your overhang can just come off of the 8x2's, yes it will want to sag forward, but once you put the roof deck on that will tie it all together.

Or you could shave 5mm off the top and fix a flat restraint strap across the header beam.

That said, we don't know how deep your overhang will be. ?

Over hang won't be huge, maybe 300mm from front edge. Apologies but confused about shaving 5mm off as door lintel will be above top of wall plates by around 50mm.

Ive got my last roof joist inside of what will be my end studs for the front wall, so set back 90mm from front edge. At the back I've done the same and then rested ends of overhangs on top of back wall plate and screwed to last roof joist. This time and if putting in the 8x2s as a lintel, that 3m+ section will be 50mm higher than the side cheeks (as they can be set the same as side wall plates)

I'm still a little confused. But I'm getting that the 3m metre 8x2 will sit beneath the top of the roof joists?

Screw short 300mm lengths into the face of the 8x2, either through the back or use small joist hangers.

(The 5mm is off of the top, to accommodate the depth of the restraint strap so that it sits flush on top so that the roof deck can sit flat)

But forget that idea, just ensure that the roof deck is a big sheet, then it will support the overhang.
