ok i have little birds getting in to the roof, i hear them sometimes and ofton see them pecking insulation away, its like blue snow falling past my window!

also they leave lots of unwanted presents on my window sill lol.

whats the best substance for filling the gap, presumably between the snone work and the facior board??

im a diy novice but a good mechanic so understand most stuff!!

You could use expanding foam but it would probably expand a trillion sizes more than you'd expect and would look ****e.

Maybe you could mix up some mortar and just gently point into the gaps? You could mask off the mini soffit board with tape then peel off after.

:)

so eerr, should the brickwork/mortar actually touch the wood?

round the rest of the building its got a bit of vented metal strip running round the gap, guess the top bits got missed out!

its rented but my landlady will pay me to do the flat and her house which is next door an has same prob. especially as been made redundant an dont have a job!

I've used expanding foam to fill gaps.

It does expand quite a lot. You have to leave it an escape gap to bulge out of. If you are sealing e.g. a cavity wall it can expand into the cavity.

I found neatest results by making a wooden trim to go over the gap, drilling 6mm holes in it, and injecting the foam through these into the gaps. The wooden trim protects the foam from sunlight which attacks it. You need a cover on both sides of the cavity otherwise it may drip and fall away before it sets. You can use fibreglass insulation to stuff down big holes.

If you wrap the trim in clingfilm first, you can remove it to clean away any spillage (otherwise the foam will glue it firmly into position). You have to clean out dust first otherwise the foam will stick to the dust not the wall. You can wash it out with water; the damp will make the foam stick better and expand and set faster.

The foam is extremely sticky so mask off the wall and anything else with tape, newspaper and cling film. Have several pairs of disposable gloves, as soon as you get foam on a glove take it off and throw it away, put on a clean one. It really is sticky! Wear disposable clothes and cover your hair and skin.

The foam will stick to the bricks and the timber or slates, and is slightly flexible so does not crack easily. It will also hold the slates and stuff in position. You can cut bulges away with a serrated knife the next day when it's set. Coarse sandpaper will take it off showy surfaces. It is much easier to mask off and prevent surfaces getting marked.
