Hi all

Down at my grandparents house today and noticed this, never really thought of it before but surely this is really not allowed?

They’ve lived there 20 years and whilst it’s never caused an issue is there anything I can do to mitigate any risk?

I suppose the risk is also there of flue gasses entering the overflow pipe and releasing gasses into the loft?

Thanks

I really don't think there is much risk of flue gases entering that overflow pipe.
There is actually more risk of flue gases entering the window if it is opened while the boiler is running, and having a flue outlet so close to a window is probably in contravention of current regulations, but probably was not when the flue outlet was installed.

what do you think isnt really allowed ?

I think current regulations specify a minimum distance between a boiler flue and a window that can be opened.
However, you are where you are with this and the easiest and quickest mitigation is just to put a portable carbon monoxide monitor on the window sill. These monitors are quite cheap to buy.

There’s a co alarm in the kitchen anyway

The annoying thing is even when time comes there is nowhere really sensible to put the boiler other than it’s current location

Hence trying to eek as much life as possible from it (no point replacing it anyway)

I was just concerned fumes could enter the house through the extractor fan albeit would that even be very likely?

Does the fan not have automatic shutters that close when the fan is off. Or if it does and they stay open the the solenoid and linkage probably need degreasing.
