My Worcester Bosch Greenstar 35 Combi boiler has just been serviced under an annual Homecare agreement. The engineer has provided me a form with only 'tick boxes' to say that it has passed. He has however, written in the margins the following measurements:

35.29
9.4
0.0006
62 ppm

What do they represent and what are the tolerances for this type of boiler?

He has also made a suggestion of fitting a "Magnabooster 22mm Combi" to prevent system clogging. It apparently comprises of a magnet which attracts particulates within the system. The boiler is only 4yrs old and the radiators were flushed during installation. Is it worth the cost at £230 a pop?

9.4 = CO2%
0.0006 = ratio CO/CO2
4.3% O2
30% Xs air.
62ppm = .0062% carbon monoxide in air.........1% would be immediate death within 1-3 minutes.

Those combustion readings are spot on.

System corrosion can be more of a problem for modern boilers, as it can lodge in the heat exchanger. It can cause a loss of efficiency and eventual breakdown. Some systems suffer more than others.

Obviously it is better that any corrosion is caught in a filter before it enters a boiler. Making sure that you check the concentration of corrosion inhibitor in your system helps keep corrosion to a minimum.

I would be going for the Fernox TF1 if it was me.

Better than fitting a filter to catch crap, is cleanning the system to remove it and then treat with inhibitor.
