Is the pump in the airing cupboard? When you turn Ch on, does the pipework at the pump get hot, before and then as far as you can feel after it?

Is the spindle in the middle of the pump spinning?

You should have water at the spindle.(pump vent)

Is the towel rail the highest point on the system? Or is there another floor?

Does the small tank run if you vent say half bucket water through an air vent or drain off cock?

Is the 3 port or 2 purt valve opening\

As said either airlock, cold feed blocked or pump knackered.
1 no, pump is in loft with boiler, yes a little
2 can feel pump vibrating can't see anything spinning
3 no water at spindle pump vent
4 yes towel rail is at highest point of system
5 3 port or 2 port valve,what are these?

Put a screwdriver in the pump vent hole, is it spinning?

Is the small header higher than the boiler/pump?

There isnt a big red vessel up there is there or pressure guage?

What is the model of your boiler?

Can you take a pic?

Valves are in the post above mate

just to check

when you bled the towel rail, water came out. But the pump is higher than that, and appears to be dry?

is there anything else as high as the pump, and is it also dry?

how far above the pump is the "header tank"

if you tie up the ball valve in the header tank, and drain a pint of water out downstairs, does the water level in the header drop by one pint?

turn the system off, above the pump to the left is a 15mm pipe, can you crack open the 15mm brass coupling and see if you get any water from it/?

May be worth while placing a few towels and a bucket under neath.,

1 yes water from towel radiator. pump is next to boiler highest in loft, yes pump is dry

2 header tank is about 4 feet above pump

3 what is the easiest way drain the water level?

cracked pipe open as you sugested plenty waterfrom it

there should be a drain cock at or about the lowest level, perhaps on a radiator near the back door (where it is easy to throw a hose outside)

we are looking at evidence to see if the system is being topped up from the tank. What you are describing often happens if there is a blockage.

It is usually just below that brass joint that you losened, you could try taking it off and poking a stiff bit of wire down. Or hold a strong magnet against the copper pipe and see if it is attracted (this happens if the pipe is clogged with black iron oxide)
