Boiler staying on, frost stat continually kicks in

looks like the cable that's been taped up was connected to that frost stat at some point, maybe a fault whith the frost stat, some ones disconnected it and wired it direct and taped it up.

Thanks breadnbutter, that does appear to be the case and the terminal screws have definitely been wound out and aa you say, the join in the cable is just about at the right place to think it once was connected, thank you

Endaxi, that makes a lot of sense. I did read about a guy who turned his water cylinder down but as I have such a tiny cylinder and such a huge bath that wasn't an option. I'm away for a bit this but will report back later, thank you
Sorry, I'm suggesting you turn the boiler stat up, not the cylinder stat down. I meant to say turn it to at least 3 o'clock and not 9 o'clock and have amended my post accordingly.

Good luck with it anyway.

I got what you meant! And at this time, 1 am, my heating hasn't come on at all yet today! Thanks for the advice

In your first post (@DJMorgan) you wrote that the water was only on for a couple of hours in the evening, if that's the case it wont be the cylinder stat/boiler stat settings causing the boiler or pump to run.
