I have just had a Worcester 28i installed. Mainly due to the reputation of reliability.
Would I be wasting my money if was to buy the third year warranty? Can I expect it too last for years - just like my old Worcester Heatslave

Carefully compare the cost with the alternative of buying BG cover after the boiler's warranty has expired.

I would not expect it to last as long as your old boiler as I believe that realiblity has been sacrificed for economy in modern boilers

I think tony means get some cover but not nescessarily the manufacturers one as it may not be the most cost effective

In my experience the main factor behind boiler reliability is how good the installation is i.e adequate flushing of system, in line scale reducers fitted in hard water areas etc

As Mr . Agile has stated , compare other companies , besides B.G. ,then the decision is up to you . Normally , a pretty reliable boiler .

Definitely take that extra year out. If you have 2 or 3 components go you are quids in! Diverter valves, P.c.bs, fans all in the 100 pound mark each.

I do have to say that in my experience most boilers either fail during the first few months or carry on without any problem until they are at least 5-6 years old.

Of course thats a generalisation and there have been some disasterous problems with the vaillant 824 series which have mostly needed the diverter valve changed after the first year and then the APS during the third year.

Boiler insurance is for peace of mind only. The reliability is very good and the costs of repairs to the insurance companies is only about £80 per annum out of the £180 pa you pay for the cover.

The difference is that the insurers have contracts with the maintainance firms whereas you could allow yourself to be ripped off if you dont know any honest and reasonable engineers.
