If you wanted to leave the Single Market, the only feasible option was NI stay inside SM for goods and a border between GB and NI (you can try and argue till your blue in the face, I’ve done all the research, and there was no other option, don’t waste your time trying to argue against it, you will lose)
So your first example of “a better deal” is simply untrue
