buy the way if you go to France with 4 people in a astra the car will be over weight before you get any duty -frees in the boot :)

Sh*t.

Kerbweight of car = 1150kg
Maximum weight of people for my car = 400kg (4 blokes)
Minimum weight of people for my car = 350kg (2 blokes and 2 healthy girls :D )

So, total weight before purchases = 1500-1550kg

Gross Vehicle Weight = 1670kg:

Therefore we can have between 120 and 170kg of purchases: Now, I haven't weighed a bottle of wine recently, but I would think it is pretty much 1kg. So, I could get between 120 and 170 bottles of wine... possibly not enough to make it worthwhile just for the wine for 4 people, but the wine shopping is just one facet of our trip.

Of course, if just two of us went that would leave 320kg for wine...

Just found this, a pdf-file (make sure you pronounce that right!) listing the current prices of Tesco's Vin Plus store in Calais. Means you can work out your savings before you go.

Just one example, Kumala looks to be about £2.50 per bottle, it is usually £4-5 in the UK. So, if you bought 200 bottles of that, and saved 2.50 per bottle the savings are significant, £300-£500. Of course, you would be sick of the stuff by the end of the week, but if you could get similar savings on all your wines then it would work out worthwhile.

Looking at that list, it also suggests that spirits and beers (well, decent beers, not the 2% stuff) are no cheaper than the UK: In fact crates of Fosters, Carling etc. are more expensive (£16) than they are in my local Sainsburys.

Pernod wasn't much cheaper though Adam, and it's listed with the spirits. :(

It would be interesting what the correct price is over there. Tesco and the like know we would compare to here, and no doubt take advantage.

Still it would make a nice change for a few days anyway.
