Bora 1.9 TDI gears cruching

Indeed Burnerman, steel + water = rust.

The lad who'd sorted the clutch out has my vote of confidence - I know him. His own garage, he's a one man band and loves his job so I confident he's done best he could.

As for the garage that changed the clutch a few years back and left the cover being left off, I concur with what you say. I had to take it off to do oil changes and never once had bother refitting it.

What intrigues me is why there was water in there in the first place......there's got to be a boot missing somewhere, I think. Bell housings usually have an oil drip hole in so who knows what's going on here.
The clutch may start to behave again, but a rusty flywheel face often means some judder, I'm afraid.
John :)

I was thinking there's usually a drain hole. . .
Do they still put "jiggle pins" in?
I haven't looked (or had to luckily) for ages.

Garages! :(
I've had little to do with them until recently, but I nearly always seem to end up with a nasty taste somehow.
Had some work done on the Passat years back, manifold to downpipe clips. I was told they were a pig to do so took it in to a VW specialist. They did the clips OK, but the air intake pipe to the injector was held on with one screw instead of three.
Fast forward to last year. Took car in for aircon recharge and brake fluid change. Offer on at local, good looking, clean and tidy garage, so took it in there. They were a bit sniffy when I asked them politely to make sure they replaced all the rubber covers on the nipples, "Of course sir we take care, etc"
Picked the car up and when I checked at home, the fluid reservoir was very nearly full. Way above the "max" mark.
So I took some fluid out, and won't be going back.
Quality job!
Seriously they weren't much cheaper than the main dealer anyway, and they have been excellent so far.
I wonder if "cheap" is indeed expensive.
