An impact driver uses rotational and linear blows. An impact wrench only uses rotational blows to the fastener
Metabo drivers are all known as impact wrenches. Whether the bit retainer is 1/4" hex or 1/2" square drive for sockets.
So I expect the mechanism is the same (excluding the 600nm range)except as I said one is beefed up to cater for the extra Nm torque.
