Keep the top bit, put it on some damp paper, should sprout, then plant up at the allotment.

Yep. I made horseradish Yorkshire puddings and home-made horseradish sauce. Much stronger than shop bought stuff. I tell you, when you grate it, it's ten times more potent than onions for making your eyes water. I'm growing my own this year on my allotment.
