Boxing for skirting

I have mdf skirting in a small toilet and need to box in (and create a ledge for products) around the soil stack ready to run my skirting over. I will be painting I will be painting the box with emulsion and the skirting in gloss.

Any suggestions for the boxing?

Properly some 1/2" ply and 2x1 give the edges a sand and insulate around the pipe to cut out any sound and a link of paint

18mm mdf , no timber required.Better finish with paint than most materials.
