Brickwork Cracks above lintels

My 9 year old grandson knows the answer to that one woody, as he plays Minecraft whenever he gets hold of his mum's tablet.
It's to do with the thrust from the Y axis on the X which transfers back to the Z rotating the Y back on the X and cracking the joints.

Brilliant. I look forward to his paper on molecular cohesion in a future Higgs Boson Monthly.

Thoughts on these cracks, same lintels used on the whole estate. (circa 1970's) but not seen these cracks above other windows on same estate.

(and common on the same estate)

Is it common on the same estate or isn't it? The step cracks do look lintel related but how do you explain the staggered cracking at the end of the building?

With calcium silicate bricks there is a lot of shrinkage, compared to clay bricks which tend to expand. You normally find that the cracks appear either at the end of the wall or at a weak spot in the wall which is at the openings. If the mortar is weak enough the joints rather than the bricks will crack.
Nowadays movements joints are used more when this type of brick is used.
This is all guesswork as they may be clay bricks.

A quick google of Calcium Silicate bricks brings up a nice example image of the problem:

Clearly the issue is related to this type of brick and rotating boot lintels and quite possible overly strong mortar. All 3 factors contributing to the overall issue, and easily fixed.

Cracking IS related to lintels

I'm back now. That was an experience out there.

Anyway, I popped into Ladbrokes and put a a tenner on it being the lintels at 720:1 based on the sure comments of everyone who doesn't '45' in their name. The bookie just laughed and said thanks. Does he know something, or where I can get these whittling spoons from, I wondered as I hurried back to the safety of home?
