British Gas 330 Boiler (Flue)

Hi,

I've recently had a service on my boiler and have been told the flue is unsafe (rust). Are flue parts still available for this boiler ? My plumber seemed a bit sceptical and said if he could not get them it was going to be a new boiler.

Who did the service? Also, what was your plumber sceptical about?

Parts may be available, flue might be unsafe. or maybe not.

Describe please, in detail. (was BG involved?)

Photo's help. I'm not a plumber so forgive me for replying but a little bit more to go on might get you better answers from the experts.

Agreed with above. You need to find out WHY there is rust in/on the flue.
This could be rainwater entering the air inlet, or more seriously it could be the internal (fumes) tube that has split/bad seal/cut incorrectly etc..
Did the service guy offer any explanation?
And the flue should still be available without issue.

I've never come across a flue that could rust (they're normally alloy or aluminium) so how old is the boiler. Put a magnet on it

You don't see many boilers then...corrode may be a better term of phrase.

Yeah, early condensing flues are getting to an age where they are not capable of doing there job anymore. We are fixing more and more. Leaking/rotted/split/perished etc..
Also some of the early terminal designs where really poor at keeping rain water out of the flue pipe (air intake), and didnt have any provision to deal with it when it did enter.
Things seem to be a bit better nowadays.....Hopefully

Hi Gents,

Thanks for your replies, the boiler is 12 years old, the flue comes out the top of the boiler, does a 90 degree bend into the airing cupboard, travels horizontally for one foot, then does another 90 degree bend into the roof where it travels another 12 feet then exits through a wall. I've put a magnet on the airing cupboard pipe and it is steel. The engineer was from BG, we called him out because when the boiler switched on water was occasionally dripping from the bottom of it. He said a new flue assembly is required. We have another engineer visiting Tuesday.

I expect the inner flue pipe wasnt deburred properly when it was installed and damaged the flue seals so the condensate drips in the air intake pipe when on and down into the boiler corroding the flue on the way.

The flue should be available still. If there is bad corrosion in the flue it would be very unusual, normally a leak on this flue shows up before it corrodes and can be fixed by dismantling it, deburring the inner flue and replacing the seals. Easy enough job for the gasman to do.
