Have to say ... the BB 500 Kb/sec is running far better than expected.

5 yr old Dell P3 .... win98se .... Just downloaded Minitab stats prog trial and all of the 'PDF' files associated. 57.7 KBytes / sec ... the trial prog was 51.11 MB ... 15min 7sec

No problems with either shutdown or standby

One happy bunny here !!

98SE has done all I want and more ... might go ShortHorn in Long term..
OS/2 ? I worked with the IBM OS from 95-2000 and on occasion to 2003.
Not much in the way of software for it .... was very stable for our application. ...
Do you get involved with loan calc software maintenance at all ? I like the way the Banks round down their APR on the advert and use the real figure for the calcs !!
A big rip, IMHO, borrow £x pay nothing for until end of 3rd month ... except one accrues a healthy 2 months extra interest on the loan !!

Sep, yeah sorry about that. Loan calc's, no don't get involved, but doesn't really surprise me if they're weighted in the banks favour.

Longhorn has been delayed due to the amount of effort put into XP SP2. Longhorn apparently due 2006 now. Apart from the fact I get the OS updates free, why would anyone upgrade, beyond me. A load more functionality that the average user either knows or cares about. As you say, reliable, secure, robust, and the fact you don't have to buy a P8 with 256Tb of RAM, a 65536TB hard that still trashes the HDD would be refreshing

I have had a play with an alpha version of Longhorn (not even in the beta stages!). Looks like it will be rather shhhhhweeeeet when finished. However, all the bits I could see were more aesthetics than actual stuff. Apparently the proposed "new" filing system will just be an extension of NTFS, so there is little that wouldn't be achieved by a "Plus!" CD for XP.

They are offering more towards the "Media PC" user: glitch free video playback is promised. As in always glitch free, never a judder because you decide to start something processor intensive halfway through a DVD. All you need to do this, though, is ensure the CPU is dedicating so much run time to the video.

I would be more tempted to build a media PC if someone started making video cards with a proper video out... Composite?! SVHS?! We use RGB scart here in the UK, m'laddy! Until they do, or I have a TV with a DVI in (which I would prefer!) I will be sticking to my ethernet-equipped "proper" DVD player for my media playing needs.

Doesn't it seem though that with every new windows release, it becomes more of a toy and less of a real OS. Where's the real clustering capability, the proper multi-tasking, hyper-threading, don't make me laugh. Process / virtual machine isolation etc etc. It's so far behind, time to get rid of in the server environment, which is exactly what I'm now doing. So Ta Ta Wintel, so long not nice knowing you, let the real men do the work, losers.

In a word, YES! Would we all think F1 racers were such great drivers if they drove a Ford Focus around the track? No, because they drive something that is hard to drive. If driven by a pro, an F1 car outperforms anything you or I could do. But, driven by someone who just thinks they know what they are doing, and it is going to crash.

I freely admit that I am not that great at Unix/Linux (I would put myself at Touring Car level, on the computing knowledge stakes ), and "give props" to those who can set it up properly. Problem is, being the youngest in the office means I have this invisible sign above my head saying "computer expert" so I have had people ask me difficult questions about setting up Linux installations to which I have had to say "Errrrrm, have you tried linux.org?!". But I am very proud that my DVD player runs on it

What most people dont realise, is that due to the ridiculous performance of modern F1 cars is that Michael Shumacher etc. aren't really driving at all. The nigh on permanent 6g's they are pulling wouldn't allow it. They are just there for show and Kevin, a spotty teenager from Kent is actually controlling the car using a wireless telemetry 'add on' connected to his x-box in his bedroom!

Oh dear I went off on one there. To put it in context, as a desktop I don't think you can beat M$, but their server environment sucks, it just does scale to enterprise solutions case study.

Put a large project out for design tender to big blue and M$ Suplly transaction rates, data volumes etc etc as usual.

M$ solution 192 Servers
IBM solution 2 AIX pSeries.

Game over.
