Believe it or not, i've managed to put together my own drawings + specification for a Building Control Application for a single storey Kitchen extension. All the drawings & design proposals are ok, but they now want the following information & i've no idea where to get it from:

- I'm going for a 14.4 degree roof pitch (it's the highest I can get) and specifed a concrete roof tile to match. But they want to know which would be suitable for that pitch.

- They want calculations for roof trusses????? and the beam + block flooring i'm going for. Where can I get that info from?????

- Calculations for steel beams (taking out a load bearing internal partition) & lintels.

The roof tile i can hopefully get info from someone like Marley's, but what's with all these calculations - where can i go for those without paying for professional fees?

Thanks for all advice in advance

Roof truss calcs normally come from the truss manufacturer.
Same with beam and block flooring calcs.
Steel beam calcs normally come from a structural engineer, depends how complex the design is.

hi go on google and search for roof truss companys try www. dontim-eng.co.uk i used them they will work out truss sizes and give u drawing of them they were very reasonable my trusses all made and delivered were cheaper than just buying the wood for hand cut. i built my own extension finishing off inside now . as for your roof pitch i think 17 degrees is lowest for concrete tiles best bet is to find out who made the tiles on your roof and find there web site and give them a ring . sounds like you will need a flat roof felt a friend did mention about boarding then tar felting low pitched tiled roofs best to ask manufacture of tiles.my roof was 19 degrees so i had to have smooth concrete any way good luck and remember the internet is the best place to look search

I know that you can get the calcs from the manufacturers, but whose to say where the builders are gonna be getting there materials from? I would have thought that once the builder knows the spec, they're gonna go where ever they can get the cheapest deal.

I suppose my ques is where can I go to get the calculations done, without having then to order the materials from them? Is it the type of thing that they would cost alot of ££££££?

The extension is only a single storey 14m2 works with a lean to roof- I'm hoping that the roof truss, beam + block manufacturers won't charge that much will they?

I have done many type of roofs and truss frame do work out a lot cheaper and labour saving so far.

mmmm.......trusses, made from matchwood, works of art, held together with cleats, wouldn't hold a fart!

As the client you should nominate the speciallist sub contractors you want to produce beam/block floor and truss roof, thus be forceful and tell them who you want.. most beam/block and truss manufacturers are more than willing to give your scheme a look over and give you an idea of what sizes/spans and overall feasability over the phone/fax (unless they arent interested in making any more money..)

Hi
I got my calculations done for £200 +vat by a structural engineer.
