What you have to remember bulbs do not give out light. What they do is suck in the dark, this is why when a bulb blows you often see the dark base where is has sucked in as much dark as it can hold, even the humble wick on a candle goes black after use where it has sucked in all the dark. You will note the same with fluorescent tubes.

If a bulb has sucked in all the dark around it then it extends an antenna to try and find more dark. This can be proven by burying a bulb in the garden or a plant pot and then waiting untill all the dark in the earth has been absorbed
