Is you keypad part of a box that is quite large or is your keypad about the size of your hand?

If it is a large box with a keypad on it then odd's on your battery is in there, if it is very small then you have a main control box somewhere!

it is a palm-sized box with lights and keypad so the battery must be in there

Doubtful, if it is palm sized then there will likely be a control box elsewhere, it is quite likely that the control box will not have much in the way of indicating what it does. Look in your airing cupboard or loft. It will have thin white cables going to it.
