Calm Down

Two points.

1) If a board is actively moderated then the very fact that it is done makes the moderators liable for illegal comments. If a board is not monitored then the people who host it cannot be held responsible for what is posted there.

2) It behoves both sides of any "conversation" to take extra care over what they write, and how they read, because the normal visual and audible cues that you get when speaking to someone are missing.
Imagine you are face to face with someone, and they tell you something. You reply "Why is that, then?". Think of the number of different inflexions you could use with those words, to impart anything from humour, to incredulity, to sarcasm, to mild curiosity, to genuine interest, to outright belligerence. Yet on the page those 4 words always look the same.

When writing something, people should consider if it could be misinterpreted, and if so, explicitly explain the tone or mood it is expressing.

When reading, people should not tend to the view that anybody who asks them a question about something they have said is challenging them.

Exactly. Thank you ban. This is precisely why I mentioned earlier that you need to establish a rapport before you enter into what you might regard as banter. As a moderator on a completely different board I frequently heard metaphorical alarm bells when viewing some responses, simply because of the possible alternative meanings/inflexions.

Hear, hear.

Ban is bang on, the trouble is we are all human, we have good days, bad days, some days when our brains don't function and we read things wrongly or more into it that we should.

We all know the practice, sometimes, as I proved this week, our brains go awol and we get a bit carried away. We post what we think not what we should. I think it is true to say we have all done this at some point in time.

This, to me, is were moderators have a role to play. My dubious post in a certain thread should have been pulled instantly by a moderator, and a message sent to me asking that I do not engage in personal attacks and if I wish to post in that thread to do so with consideration to all members of the board as unhelpful comments only cause confusion and personal comments friction.

I believe, and from personal experience moderating boards, that is the best way to go, take the problem off board and deal with it with respect to all as we all stuff up occasionally.

Dingbat, do you find your attitude is dofferent on boards your not moderating? Do you sometimes feel that perhaps you give less consideration to posts on occasion if you,ve not got the mod hat on?

Good point - I take it you are referring to my responses to/about you when you first joined the board? Yes, as in any argument you are on the outside of, it's far easier to spot conflict and be impartial when you're not one of the protagonists. Two rules I try (and sometimes fail) to work by.

1) Never get personal. Criticise something concrete, not something human. That is, if you disagree with advice given, correct it and explain why, but do not disparage the poster of that advice.

2) Never refer to a third party in a negative way to put your point across. (Fair cop, please accept apology) By this I mean that an innocent, "Jim might not agree with this" might not be taken by 'Jim' to be a nod to his superior knowledge, but instead a criticism of his manner. 'Jim' in this case is an entirely hypothetical character invented purely for the purpose of illustration and any resemblance to persons living or dead... etc.

And, by the way, what in the hell are you doing indoors on a day like this? (My excuse is I'm just checking email before taking my two-wheeled death machine on the overcrowded holiday back roads for a highly illegal burn-up.)

Dingbat, I wasn't referring to any of your posts on this forum at all..I know we did not see eye to eye occassionally, but it was never in a way I took anything personal or even mildly offended by..so that is cleared up:)

I nevere mind the FWL or Jim might not agree, and the occasional other comment directed at me with a little bit of humour in it..all part of the fun. :)

Regarding be in all day, I have Guys working today so I need to be in the office in case there are any problems. Girlfriend is a bit miffed by it, but I don't have a family, so give up my day so my partners can spend some quality time with theirs, to me that is the right thing to do. Another time one may cover for me, so it's swings and roundabouts really.

I'm out and about tomorrow though.

Okay, next ride-out you're invited. BSB at Oulton Park, May Day weekend any good for you?Failing that it looks like tomorrow's as good a day as any - if it weren't for the fact that a sudden rush of blood to my brain made me start on the bathroom when I got back this afternoon! Now, where's that plumbing forum...

cheers fwl! im in now
feel free to drop by the trade forums
here
;)

The site is extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeemmmmmmmmmllllllllyy slow in loading, if I try to register I will need a week...is the server an old P100 on a dialup by any chance :D

no lol, its a fairly new server (1.8)
it has a usb modem at the moment and it went...in a very technical term 'tits up' last night.
end of the week ..hopefully  it will be a router/linux/apache config
bear with it, the speed is sorted out now

Supersparks, If your going to run a BB from an ADSL connection then your going to have problems.

To run a BB from a "private" server you would need to have a SDSL line of at least 2MB in either direction for it to be able to cope with the potential throughput of service.

I have seen people try this before, and if you get about 20 people on the board at any one time, all posting, it'll likely crash the machine the BB or the server, or both, as it will not be able to cope.

The machine the BB runs on will need to be FAST, have at least 1024MB of fast ECC memory and preferably a dual CPU.

There is also the bandwidth issue, depending who your ISP is, they maywell disconnect your service if they realise your running a server on it as it seriously degrades the contention ratio due to the way everything is set-up in the exchanges.

Considering the cost of hosting on dedicated servers, you would be well advised to buy some hosting for the website/BB and put it all on there. It will save a LOT of hassle in the long run.

1) if need be i have the fastest computer on the market to run it on- as a last resort

2)the current problems are being caused by the current setup, which will be changed later this week

3)you may well be right about the bandwidth, and if i realy needed to ui could spend some stupid money and get a T1 or T3 line installed all for my own use- i live within a mile of the main exchange- but im not running an ict company or hoasting - beinga sparks it wouldnot make too much economic sence to do this

4)if BT kicks me of their service i will be VERY happy, i can then migrate to another ISP who is uncapped

The only thing i can suggest is that i try it and come out the wiser- i have brought nothing that i would not have nad to for my home use regardless -ie the router...infact thats all i have brought!
aboloutly everything else has been done free!

if it comes to the crunch and the need for a bigger connection becomes reality then i have already had intrest in paid advertising.

and btw, unlessyou are going to have a download server, or are going to hoast multiple websites- all large then your setup is way ott!
some websites are run on 386s with a dialup....it all depends on how much useage and traffic your line/server will get and selecting the right combination is key(btw, im not the only person who has said taht is ott so eiter you are trying to discourage me here or somone is ripping you off in a huge mannor- or you plan to do something i dont know about)

even so, it will be good when your site gets up and running, after you check teh legal issues.

good luck in your quest for another .org

ss
