Because of midges in Scotland the camping season to me and many others ends mid may. Then its using the many free bothies that occupy just about every glen in the highlands.

The mountain bothy association web site has locations of all the ones they look after. Some are in spectacular locations such as "the lookout" on Skye..

Aw come on its not that bad, me and a Fraulein spent a week on the slopes of a mountain just north of Lock Ness in 1977, we were not plagued by midges at all and that was mid summer, ALTHOUGH IT DID RAIN EVERY FRIGGIN DAY!!

This is the other reason why we use bothies in the summer. Gets your gear dry as well. Sitting round the fire at night with tons of candles for light getting sozzled is a timeless tradition.

You get to walk past the campsites in the morning and laugh at them soaked and harassed by midges as a added bonus

Maybe someone can explain this finally to me. What on gods earth posesses (I can't spell that) folk to leave a perfectly comfortable, warm house, to basically live rough for a while ?? In what way is that a "holiday" ??? beggars belief.

It was one of my best holidays, a week in Scotland, then three weeks in Gods Country, Devon & Cornwall, where we had blue sky every day and it wasn't till we crossed the boarder Venlo going back to Germany that it stared raining again.. Happy days...

I recently stayed in a bothy that had like most a visitors book. In it were the kids from a primary school who had spent the night there to learn what it was like before we had electricity. I thought at the time that was a fantastic idea and every booking from the kids was very positive and wanted to come back. everyone is different but for me its a bit like how folks like to sit n stare at a fire after a barbecue. Something there that feels good that you cannot explain.

The folks that get harassed n uncomfortable haven't got it worked out just yet but they will or pack in before they do.

Hmm, yes my wife must be mad taking my kids away fro a comfy tv, an x-box and loads of other fat inducing lard arse activities to go out and have them see the outdoors the fresh air and actually burn some calories and see what 'living' is actually really like.

People like you make this country truly what it is.

A chavtastic lazy s.hithole for fat lazy disinterested layabouts.

P.S. i don't like camping myself but i am prepared to rough it for the sake of me sprogs.

I've camped for many years (both regular camping and festivals), and wondered the same thing. Why do we do it?

Apart from the fact that its cheap, I realised its also the old theory: you get out of something what you put into it. If you put a bit of effort in (roughing it), you get something out of it. Of course when it gets too "rough", it becomes no fun, but the same can be said about other pursuits.

I feel the same way, especially as I get older. I need my daily shower and decent toilet facilities.

Camping is great, especially if you have nice weather, and the scenery is good. Kids love it. And you can't beat being somewhere remote on a clear summer's night if you want sight of the Milky Way !!!

Camping's also a means to an end if you want to go touring on a bike.... there's something nourishing about getting back to basics.

I camp regulary and last year before easter camped up in Towton , Yorkshire. No worries about mud as the frost froze it solid I and a few others warmed a brick up on the campfire and took them to bed.
