Over the last 4 or 5 months we have had this problem

Even with the CH set to OFF we still get heat going to 2 of the radiators upstairs, even if i twist the thermostat on the radiators themselves down to 0 they still put out a lot of heat.

when i put the CH on i only get heat in these two radiators, and the rest go warm, but only in parts (warm at bottom, cold at top) i have tried to bleed the radiators and they are all air free.

i know i need to get someone in to fix this but i would love an idea of what is wrong first so that they dont try and rip me off ? my instinct says it might be a pump issue or a thermostat issue? but i know nothing about plumbing, lol

i took a few pics which i hope would give some idea as to what we have in our house, any help would be greatly appriciated.

Is this a new problem, i.e it didn't happen last year, or have you just moved in to the house, so you don't know about last year?

The V4073 valve has pipes in the form of a T. One branch, marked AB goes to the pump; branch B goes to the HW cylinder; and branch A goes to the rads. Does Branch A feel warm when the heating is off? (Check about six inches from the valve.) If it does, then the valve is leaking. Does your V4073 have a small bump on the top of the silver box? If it does you can change the innards of the valve. If no bump, then the valve has to be completely replaced. In both cases the system will have to be drained.

If the valve is not leaking, you probably have "reverse circulation". This is caused by incorrect connection of the return pipe from the hot water cylinder. You can check this by feeling the radiator pipes. Turn CH OFF and HW ON. Feel the pipes connected to the rad and note which one is hotter than the other. Now turn CH ON and HW OFF and check the pipes again. If it's the other way round, you have reverse circulation. You will need a plumber to move the connection of the HW cylinder return pipe.

Cold at top usually indicates air in the system, solved by bleeding. This needs to be done with the system cold; start with the downstairs rads first.

If bleeding doesn't work, the problem could be that the rads have never been balanced.

Why do you imagine that all heating engineers are crooks?

We spend time giving you free advice on here.

Its not nice when we see people suggesting we rip anyone off.

it was working fine last year, i just noticed in the summer a few months ago that when ever the water came on the 2 radiators also came on which was unusual.

this sounds like a job for a specialist ;) i will check to see if it feels warm though and follow your advice, i'm sure who ever i get in will appriciate the prior investigation

I didn't mean to cause offence, just had a few bad experiences i suppose, not with plumbers in perticular but i have been over charged by electricians, mechanics etc so i generally try my best to know as much about it as possible so that i can make the best judgement.

i didn't mean to be rude, it is just the way i like to do things :) i'm often accused of being too trusting so i try and make sure i don't get suckered in, lol
