Do you have any reason for suspecting that it's anything other than a "manhole cover" (a drain inspection chamber cover)? My immediate neighbour has one that looks almost exactly like that.

Thanks John, we just moved in and thought I would ask the question.

Now having had a quick Google , I can see that it has inbuilt lift handles. Probably have a go at removing it to look this week .

Yes, they have some sort of lift handles (which, if 'moveable' ones, often get stuck down with muck) -and you may well have scrape around the edge of the cover (with a 'blade' of some sort) to get more muck out before you can lift it. It almost certainly is a manhole (inspection chamber) cover

It is difficult to see form the pictures, but has it been previously lifted and then put back at 180 degrees? Can't see the original installers laying out and cutting like that.

I can tell you it will be very, very heavy to lift.

Looking at the position of the house's drains and gullies will give you good clues of what is beneath it.

You make a good point John , think best left and lifted as and when

That was true of the old cast iron ones. However, that looks like a relatively modern one, probably made out of fairly thin sheet steel (or maybe even aluminium) - so, even with the tiles, it might not be all that heavy to lift.

I strongly suspect that, given my 'advancing years', I would probably now struggle to lift a cast iron one, but I know that I can fairly easily lift my neighbour's one which looks very similar to the OP's.

They are not tiles inset in to the cover they are concrete block pavers so as John says it will be heavy

Exactly like mine and yes pretty heavy and you will need to clean round the joint before you can get it out. I use an old fashioned bone handled tabll knife.

Extremely heavy with the block paviours. I lift them out one by one, keeping them in the same configuration nearby, before lifting the tray they sit in.

If it ain't broken - don't fix it
Andy suggested it may have been turned 180degrees but the paver patterns don't match either way round
Don't remove the pavers (you'll never get them back in as neat as they are now).
Simply lift one end of the cover and drag it far enough to peer inside but even then you may find debris prevents it bedding back into position correctly

I didn't have any trouble getting mine to go back in after I'd thoroughly cleaned the edges of both the manhole and the cover.

If you ever have the paving re-sanded, tape over the gap between the manhole and the cover first or you'll have one hell of a job to get the thing out again!
