Can anyone offer information about this cover?

They are not tiles inset in to the cover they are concrete block pavers so as John says it will be heavy
Fair enough.

I used the word 'tile' fairly loosely. I don't know whether they are things one can buy, or whether someone created them by slicing up pavers, but the 'things' on top of my neighbour's cover are clearly much thinner than the surrounding pavers. It is fairly heavy but, as I said, even in my 'old age' I can still lift it (I did quite recently) :)

not come across using thinner blocks for the purpose myself.
My neighbour had his drive done and very shortly after it needed to be lifted. We struggled, mostly due th the position fairly near a corner and he called the builders back in.
The frame is 900*700mm (31.5 blocks) full of 80mm deep blocks. I.ve just weighed a 50mm block at 2.43Kg making 122Kg + galv steel frame + bedding sand, or > 2½CWT.
No my idea of fun:(

I think those block-filled trays are an attempt to make paving look pretty but unsuitable for actually using as an access point.

I can lift and slide my cast-iron cover.

I couldn't shift a filled tray.

I just about still can.

I certainly couldn't get anywhere near being able to lift one such as Sunray has described. However,as I've said, my neighbour's one (which looks identical to the one we are discussing here) is much more 'clever' and sensible, since what appear to be paving blocks (just like the surrounding 'real' ones, are clearly very thin, hence relatively light. I have no idea whether what he has is 'unique' or relatively common - but an 'inspection' cover' lid which weighed best part of 130 kg seems ridiculous, because it would/could not get used for much 'inspection' !

Well my idea of a quick look is shelved. I take on board all the comments and I value my back over my inquisitive nature. It’s not a problem and hope I never need to have it lifted.
Thanks for all the info.

Pete
