Can anyone please tell me what this fitting does?

Its attached to washing machine cold water feed. Is it some kind of pressure reducer?

I was planning to remove and add a "Y" for a dishwasher..

It is a shut off valve in case of a leak under the machine.

PITA if you ask me.

Its an anti flood device for your washing machine its supposed to be fitted vertically or it doesnt work, you cant remove it either.

That's part of the hose. You can't remove that. You can still add a connection on the mains pipe for a dishwasher though.

Thanks for replies.

So i will bin that WM feed and buy a new one, add a Y where the cut off device attached to the copper and have both WM and dishwasher coming from there.
